The following programs have been developed for students at South Devon Elementary to promote a positive learning environment:
House Leagues. The whole school population has been divided into four houses. Each student can earn points for their house by demonstrating good behaviour, random acts of kindness, participation in extra-curricular events, and recognition of accomplishments.
Teams consist of students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. Siblings are on
the same team. Adults are also on the teams.
Playground safety team. This small team of students has been responsible for making others aware of the playground dangers and safety rules.
Recognize and celebrate diverse cultures as well as special events. Some occasions we have celebrated are: winter festival, 100th day of school, Halloween Howls,
Aboriginal Day, O Canada (Maliseet, French, English).
Police school programs. Cst. Jan Smith spent a week at South Devon making students aware of different problems (bullying, bus safety) and teaching students strategies to deal with these problems.
Intramural sports. The school has offered intramural basketball,
cross country running, and hockey to grad three to five children.
Enrichment programs and projects. Some of the programs and projects include: the peer helpers web page, the reading buddies published book, and the project and display on Egypt.
Peer Helpers. The school has selected 15 grade four and five students. These students patrol and monitor the playground and offer help and guidance to students in need.
They will also lead activities on the playground (and during indoor
recess).
New playground equipment. The new playground equipment has offered students a place to play safely and has developed a sense of pride among the students.
Drama Festival. The students of South Devon Elementary will be entering a group in the upcoming Drama Festival.
Track and Field Day. Grade 3 to five students will compete in an outdoor track and field day. The top two competitors in each event will compete in the district track and field event.
The K-2 students have their own field day planned and lead by the peer
helpers.
Focus on First Nation Students. South Devon Elementary recognizes its First Nation students and has committed daily to acknowledging their history and heritage and teaching student in the Maliseet language.
Conflict Resolution. A strong effort to articulate to the community behavioural expectations and steps taken to be proactive and consequence clear (a no-blame approach, natural and logical consequences, restitution).
Development Assets have been taught and students are aware of the skills
to be developed. We have a monthly focus to target specific Assets.
